In this section, I have included an array of sample media and magazine publication pieces I have done throughout my time at the University of California, Santa Barbara. More specifically I have included an environmental narrative, a restaurant review, an infographic, and a flyer. Each piece consists of the following:
Environmental Narrative: This piece is used to talk about an environmental issue or crisis through a story. By grabbing the ready through a detailed and passionate narrative, one facilitates the readers ability to understand and see the environmental issue being discussed from the writers perspective.
Restaurant Review: This is a critique as seen in the New Yorker and many other forms of media. By explaining the entrees in extreme detail one can show (rather than tell) the reader just what they are reviewing. Using descriptive details while also keeping the format simple, one can persuade the reader to eat or not to eat at any given place.
Infographic: This is an informative yet easy way to explain an issue or topic to any given audience. Supplying the reader with a brief idea of the severity of a situation is just enough to leave an impact on the reader. Using graphics, short statements, and appealing to pathos, can be an effective way to get ones point across to a variety of people.
Flyer: Flyers have many purposes. Whether it be for a stores grand opening, or a organizations upcoming event, flyers need to be short, aesthetically pleasing, and straight to the point. Design is extremely important, and the purpose of a flyer is to be noticed, read, and acted on.
These pieces taught me the importance that design and writing style have on media and magazine publication. Far different from academic writing, these pieces still attract the reader, engage them in what you want to say, and can influence them to act in the way portrayed in each piece.
